What do restaurants REALLY do with the leftover food?

We are living in an age which has reached a long way, with all the technology and computer-aided systems. We seldom speculate over the past that has passed because everything is easy, taken for granted.

Luxury was there in the past and persists today at a larger scale. Eating out is one such facet of luxury which always decides an individual’s status. Restaurants have not lagged behind in the tradition of ranks. The irony with all the ranks and stars (the restaurants boast) is the food that goes to waste everyday in large heaps. Where do the restaurants with high statuses confess that? Well, In the following article, different pros and cons with regard to this will be discussed.

  • About Food

There are different kinds of food that go untouched or uneaten in restaurants. This varies from the cooked food which remains even after being served, also the food which is left over by the customers and the raw vegetables and some other uncooked food raw food which is not used. There are alternatives to use this food because its loss can be too expensive and also very immoral.

  • Reuse Raw or Edible Food

Restaurants usually refrigerate and reuse certain items which are deep fried or not fully cooked. This is a safe measure as deep fried cooking doesn’t get stale that easily. Most of the restaurants do refrigerating because that is the best means to reuse the leftover and not getting it wasted. So, prawns, fish, some vegetables and poultry are left in the early stages of cooking, then they are good for reuse.

  • QSR And Food Wastage Control

Most restaurants, usually in the USA have QSR(quick service restaurants). These are counters where they serve kebabs, sandwiches and rolls. So, if there is some marinated leftover food they just transfer it here as these counters  offer late night service too. This way food Wastage is curbed. They also employ food controllers who keep a check on the spoilage of food which in turn saves money.

 

  • Food for the Staff

Some restaurants prefer to feed their staff with the leftover. Yes! And why not? Can’t the staff get perks of the luxury they can’t afford but see from afar. Restaurants pass it on to their staff which is a good option. Sweepers, security guards and waiters have all right to have some tasty meal.

  • Donating and Feeding the Poor

Donation is a very generous act some restaurants prefer. Why waste food knowing many people sleep starving at night? So, restaurants give it away. In case there is huge quantity of food left, preference is given to orphanages. But in case of little leftovers they distribute it to the needy in temples and other such places.

 

  • Food Recovery Programmes

This programme has been a major step in saving waste food. Many people in the world starve everyday and die. Does this infuriate us? Well, it should. Because while half the people are throwing away money on food, some don’t even have a bread. Food recovery programmes usually are run by soup kitchens and food pantry which take the food uneaten from restaurants to provide to the needy. They also ensure warm and nutritious meal. It is a kind act and taking responsibility is not everyone’s thing.

 

Food Wastage is a big issue in today’s day, it’s not a thing to boast about. It is a shame. So, restaurants giving their best in order not to waste food are the best ones.
